Other issues for time studies in the lab include how to handle tests run on multichannel analyzers, as well as how to allocate time for quality-control tests, instrument setup and shutdown, repeats, and specimen processing if these tasks are conducted by staff who do not perform the actual tests.
Briefly, chemistry tests [total protein, albumin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LD), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), [gamma]-glutamyltransferase (GGT), cholinesterase, serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, uric acid], CRP, and sialic acid were measured simultaneously on an automated multichannel analyzer (Model 736; Hitachi).
Multichannel analyzer A high-volume analyzer, the modular AU5400 series automates and consolidates chemistry/immuno testing with up to 147 on-board chemistries and throughput up to 6,600 tests per hour.
It is also a relatively new addition to the vocabulary of the clinical chemist, having been imported from the lexicon of the genomics, proteomics, and drug discovery scientists, but it is not a new concept for the clinical chemist who has been exposed to the use of so-called multichannel analyzers for many years, first continuous flow and then discrete analyzers.
