announced today that it has received manufacturing and marketing authorization in Japan from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for antiepileptic agent Inovelon(R) (rufinamide), approving the drug as an adjunctive therapy to other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in the treatment of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a rare disorder.

Bailey Williams, right, from Fairwater, Cardiff, was diagnosed with the rare condition Lennox-Gastaut syndrome at just two years old and the extreme form of epilepsy has drastically affected his whole life.
The researchers studied 43 patients at Children's Hospital, between the ages of twelve months and 15 years, where majority of the children who responded to the diet had either a severe form of childhood epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome or symptomatic generalized epilepsy.
It is indicated for adjunctive therapy in partial seizures, generalized seizures of Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures in adults and pediatric patients (greater than or equal to 2 years) as well as for conversion to monotherapy in adults with partial seizures who are receiving treatment with carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, or valproate.
OVATION Pharmaceuticals has undertaken a clinical development program to gain Food and Drug Administration approval for clobazam for the treatment of pediatric and adult patients with refractory epilepsy, specifically in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS).
