In an article published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, Swiss researchers report the results of a trial that uncovered a benefit for supplementation with chondroitin sulfate in men and women with osteoarthritis of the hand.
Chondroitin sulfate slows the progression of knee osteoarthritis, according to findings from a pilot study that used magnetic resonance imaging to assess joint structural changes.
Subgroup Therapy "This rigorous, large-scale study showed that the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate appeared to help people with moderate to severe pain from knee osteoarthritis, but not those with mild pain," says Stephen Straus, director of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
The new product, which contains fish collagen, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, elastin, ceramide, vitamin C, B2 and B6, helps maintain the skin condition.
For the other, they used a modified version of a GAG called chondroitin sulfate, which until now had no known healing effect.
