While approximately 80% of non-cancer/non-emphysema related respiratory disease is attributed to influenza and pathogens causing typical pneumonia, the apparent increasing incidence of atypical pneumonia is presenting clinicians with a potentially concerning trend.
Treatment regimens have included several antibiotics to presumptively treat known bacterial agents of atypical pneumonia.
