O'Hora, Pelaez, and Barnes-Holmes (2005) showed that participants who successfully completed a complex relational task involving Same/Different and temporal relations performed significantly better on the vocabulary and arithmetic subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale Third Edition (WAIS-III; Wechsler, 1997) than those participants who failed to do so.
The study evaluated 138 adults (aged 21-29 years) with sickle cell disease and 37 controls, using a variety of cognitive tests, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-III), the Wechsler Memory Scales (WMS-III), the Woodcock-Johnson Tests of Achievement, the Test of Everyday Attention (TEA), and the WAIS Processing Speed Index, which assesses attention and the ability to plan and coordinate visual information and motor activities.
The verbal subtests of the third edition of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS-III; Wechsler, 1997) were also administered.
