WREXHAM resident Dawn Harrison is in the running to receive the Cats Protection's highest honour for volunteers after being shortlisted for Cats Protection's Volunteer of the Year Awards.
Perhaps a sign of her diligence, Mary Lou Probka was working so hard on this year's SIPA conference, which was chaired by her boss, Guy Cecala of Inside Mortgage Finance, that she was taken by complete surprise in being named the association's Volunteer of the Year.
Three winners were selected in each of the nine categories, which included Organisation of the Year, Young Volunteer of the Year and Neighbourhood Action Volunteer of the Year.
The award for Volunteer of the Year is on the Pi Society docent who best exemplifies the dedication to science, imparting knowledge to the children and patrons and using their talent, skill and humaneness to help provide visitors to the museum with a fun and enlightening experience.
The awards were: Working with Disabled Performers - Dick Wilkinson, Tees Rowing Club; Young Volunteer of the Year - Rebecca Vaslet, Tees Rowing Club; Volunteer of the Year - Stewart Evans, Billingham Rugby Club; Coach of the Year Fred Kirby, Borough of Stockton Swim Scheme (BOSS); Lifetime Achievement - Colin Davison, Northfield Table Tennis Club.
Barbara King was honored as individual volunteer of the year; Cinthia Bonilla, who was absent, was honored for her case management prowess; and the Worker's Credit Union (WCU) was honored as group volunteer of the year.
The 61-year-old, who helped keep Holy Cross School open, is Cosmopolitan Housing Association's volunteer of the year.
