The CDC developed its Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP), which operates under the U.
Background In 1975, the then-Sanitation and Vector Control Activity (now the Vessel Sanitation Program [VSP]) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began surveillance for enteric diseases aboard passenger cruise ships.
This variant was found on cruise ships through the US Vessel Sanitation Program and in nursing homes and hospitals through the FBVE network (18-20).
The CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program regularly inspects ships and issues sanitation scores based on a 100-point scale.
If we are planning to go on a cruise, we should find out about recent gastroenteritis -or other infectious diseases outbreaks on a specific cruise or cruise line by contacting our travel agent and the health department at the city of the port of departure, or the Center for Disease control [CDC], Vessel Sanitation Program [VSP], 1-800-323-2132.
Inspections conducted by the Vessel Sanitation Program evaluate sanitation performance in six major categories: disease reporting, potable-water maintenance and distribution, swimming pools and spas, food safety and handling, medical-log maintenance and reporting, and environmental health practices.
The reason you hear about Norovirus on cruise ships is because they are required to report every incidence of gastrointestinal illness," said Dave Forney, chief of the vessel sanitation program of the U.
Acknowledgments We thank the staff of the local and state health departments and the Vessel Sanitation Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who participated in the investigations summarized in this manuscript.
