Does age or other factors influence the incidence of ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections.
We describe a case of VRE ventriculitis in a hospitalized 17-month-old male with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) successfully treated with intravenous (IV) linezolid.
Usually, such surgery consists of insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt, which transports excess fluid from the lateral ventricle into the peritoneal cavity.
Clinical manifestations of infections with these organisms include abscesses (3), meningitis (4), ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection (5), spondylodiscitis (6), prosthetic joint infection (7), catheter-related bacteremia (2), and endocarditis (1).
Abdominal ultrasound was performed after insertion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt to relieve the hydrocephalus during induction chemotherapy, and a large left adrenal mass was detected.
