Following that, is an excellent review on Ventilation/Perfusion concepts by educator Bill Wojciechowski RRT.
ABSTRACT & COMMENTARY Synopsis: Ventilation/perfusion scanning appears to be safe and effective, at least in ruling out significant clinical pulmonary embolism in pregnant patients.
However, I believe helical CT will prove to have a high negative predictive value for recurrent thromboembolic disease and since the primary prognostic factor for recurrent pulmonary embolism is residual DVT in the proximal veins, the technique of combined CT pulmonary angiography and lower extremity and pelvic venography will supplant the ventilation/perfusion scan and become the examination of choice in the evaluation of suspected pulmonary embolism.
Later, however, Finley et al suggested that the alveolar-capillary membrane in interstitial pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) was affected in a non-uniform manner, leading to ventilation/perfusion ([V.
