Omapatrilat is an investigational drug in a new class of cardiovascular medications, called vasopeptidase inhibitors (VPIs), which simultaneously inhibits two key enzymes that regulate heart function and blood pressure -- neutral endopeptidase (NEP) and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).
Omapatrilat is the first and most clinically advanced vasopeptidase inhibitor, says John Kostis, MD, principal investigator of the study and chair of the department of medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick, NJ.
Like standard ACE inhibitors, the vasopeptidase inhibitors block angiotensin converting enzyme, which raises blood pressure.
