Byline: ANI Washington, Oct 7 (ANI): A new study has revealed that daily doses of a targeted drug called imatinib mesylate along with regular chemotherapy can almost double the survival rate of children with a high risk type of blood cancer called Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL).
When discussing the survival rate of any cancer, references are often made to the "five year survival rate".
The study, which was funded by the Medical Research Council and is published today in The Lancet Oncology, found that after five years the overall survival rate for men with advanced prostate cancer was 30% for those who had been taking sodium clodronate and 21% among those who weren't.
The new research, funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the British Journal of Cancer, shows that patients who had surgery and chemotherapy with a drug called 5FU alongside folinic acid, had a five year survival rate of 24%.
Disease recurrence and survival rates were analyzed in patients with HCC.
Analyses showed that the difference in survival rates between different age classes was significant in all the experiments conducted, with the maximum survival rate being achieved in the 24-h-old larvae.
