LAHORE, November 10, 2009 (Balochistan Times): World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P) reviewed the progress of Sub-Watershed Management and environmental Awareness Project in and around Ayubia National Park (ANP), NWFP.

Thompson Creek is the largest sub-watershed of the Roaring Fork Valley.

In a power-point presentation made in the meeting, it was stated that the project envisages coverage of 4,32,920 hectares and is spread over 11 sub-watershed areas for adopting an integrated watershed management to reverse the process of degradation of the natural resource base, as well as enhance its productivity and improve livelihood of poor rural households in the project area.

The score of each sub-watershed is based on raw spatial data in the form of points, lines and polygons.

The sub-watersheds covered by these creeks accounted for 66 percent of the total watershed.

The money will be used to complete watershed assessment work in the Little Fall Creek, Lost Creek and Lower Middle Fork sub-watersheds, as well as a habitat restoration action plan for those areas.

A GIS (Geographic Information System)-based approach was used to delineate the drainage area above each site and determine the land use characteristics of the sub-watershed.

The model is based on 1992 satellite imagery that shows that of 378 sub-watersheds in the forest, 152 are ponderosa pine forests with high fuel loadings and a past history of ignitions from lightning or human causes.
