What does SMR stand for?

Air Products will build a steam methane reformer (SMR) producing over 100 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of hydrogen.

Achieving production at the PDU is the result of the successful operation and integration of all processes at the facility, including the steam methane reformer for the production of synthesis gas; the conversion of the synthesis gas in the Rentech reactor into clean hydrocarbons; the separation of the Rentech catalyst from the wax produced from the reactor; and the processing and upgrading of the hydrocarbons into ultra-clean synthetic fuels using UOP hydrocracking and hydrotreating technologies.

Synthesis gas (syngas) has been successfully produced from the steam methane reformer at the plant, however an issue was identified in the syngas clean-up portion of the PDU which is currently being repaired.

Catalyst has also been loaded into the steam methane reformer, enabling the activation of the equipment and the production of synthesis gas for the process.

The Partnership will begin construction of a steam methane reformer ("SMR") facility at its Javelina plant in the fourth quarter of 2007, and expects to commence delivering high-purity hydrogen in early 2010.
