0 M will be used to enhance and upgrade several key components of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX), one of the Nation's key centers for magnetic fusion energy research at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

The construction will be gradually phased out, to continue PPPL's work on the National Spherical Torus Experiment, which studies plasma and the conditions where fusion can occur.

In the meantime, contributors of these 61 papers and other materials describe international cooperation and overall progress in fusion research, results of plasma-focus experiments and dense plasma focus, numerical simulations and burning plasma concepts, antimatter-initiated microfission/fusion, studies of fast particles using pellet charge exchange diagnostics, plans for the National Ignition Facility, physics results and prospects of the National Spherical Torus Experiment, fusion at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Z-pinch experiments, laser fusion in China, and fast ignition.

He states, "The concepts that have attracted the most attention, and are the focus of this charge, are the stellarator, spherical torus, reversed field pinch, and compact tori (spheromak and field-reversed configuration).

Hawryluk, the Board noted his scientific leadership previously of the Princeton Large Toms (PLT), Princeton Divertor Experiment (PDX) and Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) projects and, more recently, the National Spherical Torus (NSTX) and National Compact Stellarator (NCSX) projects.
