The following pulmonary function tests were performed for each subject using a Med-Graphics [TM] metabolic cart and Breeze Software [TM]: forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), slow vital capacity (SVC), maximum volitional ventilation (MVV), maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP).
Outcome measures Lung function was measured as inspiratory capacity and slow vital capacity in litres according to ATS/ERS taskforce guidelines (Miller et al 2005) with a portable automated spirometer (a).
The three parameters which will be followed in the trial are: Forced Expiratory Volume 1 (FEV1), the volume of air that can be breathed out during the first second of forced exhalation; Slow Vital Capacity (SVC), the amount of air that can be forcibly expelled from the lungs after breathing in as deeply as possible and Inspiratory Capacity (IC), the maximum volume of air that can be breathed in after breathing out normally.
