The college's Service Learning Program combines community service with academic instruction, focusing on four key areas: critical thinking and problem solving; values clarification; social and personal development; and civic and community responsibility.

The money also will be used to bolster the school's Global Service Learning program -- students spending at least a month in developing countries to help refugees, improve environmental sustainability and help in other ways.

Utilizing methods ranging from experimental laboratory work to analyses of large data sets, the contributors consider the different units of analysis of volunteerism; evidence of health consequences of social participation; social support and self-esteem correlates of community involvement among Latino gay men in New York City; the role of personality factors in decisions to engage in volunteering; systematic factors, individual characteristics, and attitudinal factors in South African participation in civil society organizations; and assumptions behind service learning programs.
