Scores On The Doors, which is celebrating its third anniversary in Liverpool, exposed a series of restaurants and even school canteens for unhygienic practices.
The hygiene star rating system, known as Scores on the Doors, was introduced by councils a year ago as a guide to help shoppers decide where they should eat or buy their food.
It holds a Healthy Choice Award and has also achieved the highest five star rating available through the Kirklees Council Environmental Services Scores on the Doors Scheme.
The chippy has just one star out of five in the council's Scores on the Doors website, which says there is "little" confidence in management and just "fair" compliance with hygiene regulations.
Newcastle City Council executive member for community safety and regulation Anita Lower said: "Initiatives like scores on the doors are drastically improving food safety standards in businesses across the city making Newcastle a healthier and safer place in which to eat.
There is no legal requirement for the businesses to display the star rating certificate, but all the ratings will be published on the Scores on the Doors website - www.
