The company also said their SAN Volume Controller storage virtualization appliance now supports solid state disk drives, greatly increasing the throughput of the device.
IBM's SAN Volume Controller was selected, in particular, because of "its ability to manage large amounts of data spread across multiple SAN Storage Systems and has the ability to handle virtual devices, not physical devices," said Paul Engberg, director of technical services at PPH, in an e-mail.
The Hitachi Thunder 9200 and Thunder 9500V Series modular storage systems were announced as supported by the IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller, an IBM storage virtualisation product.
To address the challenges and overheads of managing zoning, LUN masking, and the large number of host-LUN mapping and routes on the application hosts, the out-of-band (or asymmetric) virtualization appliance and the in-band (or symmetric) SAN volume controllers were introduced.
At it annual analysts' conference in New York yesterday the storage giant also outlined the smart-switch based software it will ship next year, promising huge throughput and in the process taking a major swipe at IBM's competing SAN Volume Controller software.
The SAN Volume Controller, code-named "LoadStone," is a two-way xSeries server running an embedded version of Linux and IBM's StorageTank virtualization software; an entry configuration of this machine, which will be available in July, costs $75,000.
This culminated in the successful architecture of one of the world's largest IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) installations.
