A Resource Based View of the Firm, Strategic Management Journal, 5, 2, 1984, pp.
In a move towards the resource based view of the firm (Wernerfelt, 1984; Penrose, 1959) the theory of competence based strategy (Prahalad and Hamel, 1990) became popular, but its application was manifested more in a mode of operational effectiveness than that of resource "stretch and leverage", an approach espoused and supported with some rigour by Hamel and Prahalad (1994).
Based on this reasoning, we integrate both the Resource based view of the firm with Transaction cost economics to arrive at a more holistic and comprehensive theoretical model of entrepreneurial e-commerce initiatives.
Recent research on core competence by Prahalad and Hamel (1990) and the stream of research on organizational capabilities (Stalk et al, 1992; Teece, et al, 1997) could also be generally considered being within the intellectual paradigm of the broadly defined resource based view of the firm.
Recommendations for achieving sustainable competitive advantage in ways that are difficult to imitate are consistent with the propositions of the resource based view of the firm (Barney 1991, Penrose 1959).
