Six months after the launch of the Florida Supreme Court approved Florida Registered Paralegal Program--which provides for voluntary registration of paralegals who meet minimum educational, certification, or work experience criteria, and agree to abide by an established code of ethics--applications for the program are outpacing what Bar FRP Counsel Lori Holcomb expected the program would generate in its first full year.

Diner also said the Bar estimated that between 250 and 300 paralegals would sign up for the new Florida Registered Paralegal program, which began March 1, in its first year.

Since the Supreme Court approved the creation of the Florida registered paralegal program this past November, many paralegals have already contacted the Bar about joining the program, according to Lori Holcomb, the Bar's UPL counsel who staffed the Special Committee to Study Paralegal Regulations.

The Florida chapter holds quarterly meetings via teleconference for its regular members, and will gather in West Palm Beach on May 9 for a one-day roundtable meeting to learn about and discuss the Florida Registered Paralegal Program and its impact on law firms.

The Bar's Florida Registered Paralegal Program Committee met last month at the Midyear Meeting to work out the last details of the new operation, which begins March 1.
