In 1998, the Alberta Protection Against Family Violence Act came into effect defining family violence as any intentional or reckless act or omission that causes injury or property damage, the purpose of which is to intimidate or harm a family member; any act or threatened act that causes a reasonable fear of injury or property damage, the purpose of which is to intimidate or harm a family member; forced confinement, and sexual abuse.
The statute imposes felony penalties for someone who intentionally and repeatedly follows the victim, intending to frighten, intimidate or harass that person, while placing the victim in reasonable fear of injury.
The Report goes on to list more specifically some examples of abusive conduct: * intentional intimidation of the cohabitant by any actions (or inactions) which cause injury to the cohabitant or damage to property; * intentional intimidation of the cohabitant by any act or threatened act which causes a reasonable fear of injury, or of damage to property; * forced confinement; * sexual abuse.
