The tiny beetle is a natural enemy of the pink hibiscus mealybug, a ravenous agricultural pest which was first detected here in June.
Alfred Benjamin, the islands' chief agricultural officer, said Saturday that a team is trying to determine the extent of the pink hibiscus mealybug infestation discovered in recent days on the western tip of Cayman Brac, the westernmost island in the three-island Caribbean chain.
The infestation by the pink hibiscus mealybug, which feeds on the sap, roots and leaves of plants, was confirmed in Grand Cayman in June but has not spread to the British dependency's two other islands, according to the Agriculture Department.
