The grant program was established by the 2007 Oregon Legislature through the passage of House Bill 3141, which set new requirements for minimum physical education instruction (150 minutes per week in elementary schools, 225 minutes per week in middle schools).
To achieve that level of activity, NASPE and AHA recommend that schools across the country make physical education instruction the cornerstone of a comprehensive school physical activity program that also includes health education, elementary school recess, after-school physical activity clubs and intramurals, walk/bike to school programs, and staff wellness programs.
