November 22, 2009 (KHARTOUM) -- Darfur hybrid mission in (UNAMID) today welcomed the visit of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC)to the headquarters of the Mission in El-Fashir on Tuesday.
15-member African Union Peace and Security Council Panel Meets on Darfur --Proposes End to Sudan-Darfur conflict --Says Special Court to Try those Charged with Crimes Needs Further Discussion --Says Sudan Peace Agreement Is Vital Sudan's vice president on Thursday cautiously welcomed proposals from a panel of African leaders to end conflict in Darfur but said the question of a special court to try those charged with atrocities needed further discussion.
The AU's Peace and Security Council "expresses deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Guinea and the consequences it has for the process of return to constitutional order in the country," a statement said.
According to working documents exclusively obtained from the African Union (AU) Secretariat in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the plans for the expanded African Peace and Security Council are on course.
This is followed by extracts from the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, 2002; the mandate for the African Union Mission in Burundi based on a 2003 Communique of the Central Organ of the Mechanism for Conflict Prevention, Management and Resolution; the Report of the Chairperson of the Commission on the Establishment of a Continental Peace and Security Architecture and the Status of Peace Processes in Africa, 2004; the Roadmap for the Operationalization of the African Standby Force, 2005; a Briefing Note on the Renewal of the Mandate of the AU Mission in the Sudan, 2005; and a 2006 Communique of the AU Peace and Security Council regarding the situation in Darfur (Sudan).
Last month the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) held meeting in Abuja to discuss a report compiled by a panel led by Mbeki on justice and peace in Darfur.
We believe that we can move forward in terms of peace and discussions," the AU's Peace and Security Council chief Ramtane Lamamra said, singling out Somalia.
