Ocean heat content for January to June was estimated down to depths of 700m and 2000m and both were the highest recorded.
According to measurements by an array of autonomous free-floating ocean floats called Argo, as well as by earlier devices called expendable bathythermographs, or XBTs, that were dropped from ships to obtain temperature data, ocean heat content has increased over the last 16 years.
The objectives of the buoy program are three-fold: 1) monitor the upper ocean heat content and ocean-to-ice fluxes; 2) quantify entrainment rates of heat that result from temporal and spatial variability in both the structure of the Arctic halocline and the strength of turbulent mixing mechanisms; and 3) test and improve parameterizations of ocean-to-ice fluxes for use in Pan-Arctic scale modeling efforts.
These findings suggest that the observed decrease in upper ocean heat content from 2003 to 2005 could be the result of a net loss of heat from the Earth to space.
