One of the original founders of the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895, Leigh have had financial problems since major backer Arthur Thomas withdrew his support earlier this year.
On August 29, 1895, 21 northern rugby clubs held a meeting at the hotel and voted 20 to 1 to break away from the Rugby football Union to set up the Northern Rugby Football Union, later the Rugby Football League.
After the schism of 1895, rubber stamped in the George Hotel, Huddersfield, the northern clubs were free to go-ahead and instigated the Northern Rugby Football Union Challenge Cup.
The first resolution adopted was as follows: "The clubs here represented decide to form a Northern Rugby Football Union, and pledge themselves to push forward without delay its establishment on the principle of payment for bona fide broken time only.
