During the last ten years, both were thoroughly studied, and it is now clear that: a) because of its strong dependence on process model and conditions that must be satisfied, differential geometry control techniques are difficult to implement in real process, although they are useful for nonlinear process analysis; and b) nonlinear model predictive control techniques are potentially useful as an extension of the successful linear model predictive techniques, a recursive optimization problem.
At the same time many theoretical, computational and implementation aspects of model-based control are explained, with a look at both linear and nonlinear model predictive control.
