The team of 16 athletes from Newcastle University Boat Club (NUBC) hope to travel more than 308 miles in less time than the DFDS Seaways' vessel's average crossing time of 16 hours.
The seven-strong outfit from Newcastle University Boat Club are bound for the Polish city of Kruszwica next week to take part in the 5th European Universities rowing championship.
Newcastle University Boat Club head coach Angelo Savarino said: "This is a truly historic result, being the first time in the history of Newcastle University they have won a Henley medal.
Dan Cupit, President of Newcastle University Boat Club, added: "Obviously we're disappointed, but that's the way it goes, and we'll be back next year more determined than ever.
