Riggers translate the requirements into bundle counts, the mobility control team assigns a mission number or ITARS (intertheater airlift request system) number for each airlift, and the air mobility division allocates each aircraft for a specific airdrop mission.
If an incident happens on any of the missions, the mission number is highlighted in red and the type of incident and any battle damage assessments (BDA) are typed into the remarks block as a quick reference.
The advantages in doing so are digital transmission from the AFATDS work-station up the fire support chain to the joint air operations center (JAOC) and to its associated battlefield coordination detachment (BCD); automated response regarding whether the request was approved, disapproved or is still in coordination; digital transmission of a mission number when approved; and the capability to receive the ATO with other mission data.
That allows users to see specific target information such as the identification number, name, next mission number scheduled against it, hit or no hit status, BDA, re-attack recommendation, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) collections status.
