In an effort to define the essential elements of the midwifery model so that marketing and public relation efforts could be coordinated, representatives from the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA), the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), the Midwifery Education and Accountability Council (MEAC), and Citizens for Midwifery (CFM) have devised the following definition.

Midwifery Model of Care

Recognition of all midwifery educational programs and processes, including apprenticeship, whose knowledge base (core competencies), skills, and experience requirements meet those established by the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) or the Midwives Alliance of North America (NMA).
