Byline: The Associated Press ANCHORAGE -- The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has voted to place an unprecedented limit on the number of king salmon accidentally killed each year during the commercial Bering Sea pollock catch, which involves numerous Seattle-based ships.
The decision from the Pacific Fishery Management Council, a federally appointed committee of experts and industry representatives which manages fisheries off the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington, comes on the heels of a sudden and unprecedented decline in the numbers of Chinook salmon returning to California's Sacramento River, historically one of the largest wild salmon fisheries in the region.
The FSCT and NPCA intend to accomplish the objectives described in the Memorandum of Agreement by amending the FSCT Bylaws to: * create an additional class of membership of the FSCT in which the NPCA will be the only member; * establish a new FSCT Board of Directors to consist of three NPCA representatives and two FSCT representatives; * reconstitute a new FSCT Management Council comprised of the current FSCT Board of Directors to provide advice and support to the new FSCT Board of Directors and officers in the operation and management of the FSCT; and * vest the sole right to vote on matters submitted to the members in the NPCA (with the exception of the election of certain members of the Management Council).
As expected, the Pacific Fisheries Management Council provided little hope for sport or commercial salmon fishermen at its meeting in Sacramento, Calif.
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) has been unable to prevent the decline of species such as pollock, Pacific cod, halibut or Atka mackerel; NPFMC models project significant drops in catch quotas for most groundfish species in the coming years.
