The enzyme called lysyl oxidase (LOX) has been found to stiffen collagen, a major component of the supportive tissue in the breast.
The ceruloplasmin is responsible for most of the transport of bivalent copper around the body, in the tissues of which it helps to form the bivalent copper enzymes previously mentioned, such as Cytochrome C oxidase and Lysyl oxidase.
The lysyl oxidases lysyl oxidase (LOX) and (LOXL) are responsible for elastin cross-linking.
Giaccia and his colleagues turned their attention to a substance that they had previously shown to be involved in metastasis: a protein called lysyl oxidase, or LOX.
According to the researchers, this project shows that some drugs prescribed for patients with cardiac insufficiency do not actually inhibit the enzyme lysyl oxidase, nor do they reduce fibrosis or improve heart functions.
The compounds are believed to exert their effect by binding extracellular copper and inhibiting a critical enzyme, lysyl oxidase, required for collagen cross-linking to allow new blood vessels to form in the tumor bed.
While studying breast cancer in mice, Janine's team have found that in the absence of the LOX enzyme, full name lysyl oxidase, new environments in the body would be too hostile for the cancer to grow.
