What does LICA stand for?

Recently passed by the Mauritius Legislature, the International Arbitration Act 2008 (the "Act") is based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration adopted by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law in 1985, and as amended by the UNCITRAL in 2006.

In resolution 40/72, the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to transmit the text of the Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, adopted by UNCITRAL, to Governments and to arbitral institutions and other interested bodies such as chambers of commerce, and recommended that all States give due consideration to the Model Law, in view of "the desirability of uniformity of the law of arbitral procedures and the specific needs of international commercial arbitration practice".

However, with increased agitation for change emerging from a number of sources, not least Chief Justice Spigelman of the New South Wales Supreme Court, SCAG, at its last meeting in April 2009, agreed to the preparation of new uniform commercial arbitration legislation based on the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration, 'supplemented by any additional provisions as are necessary or appropriate for the domestic scheme'.
