What does ILY stand for?

Fifteen years on from the 1988 International Literacy Year many public libraries in Queensland have come a long way in the level and depth of adult literacy services they provide.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was called upon to continue assuming the role of lead organization in ensuring an effective follow-up to the International Literacy Year, which was observed in 1990, and to pursue the implementation of the World Declaration on Education for All.

An exhibit on literacy for blind and visually impaired people will be launched in New York City in January 1990 to inaugurate International Literacy Year, designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
