Daily increment counts were possible for a total of 107 (82%) otoliths from age-0 dolphinfish (designated age-0 because of a lack of annual marks on scales [see below]).
Increment counts and location of checks were determined twice on each otolith by a single observer.
The slope of the regression of increment count on known-age was not significantly different from one and thus indicated that increment formation occurred daily.
Age was determined by adding the correction factor to the increment count from the first identifiable increment to the otolith margin (Rooker and Holt, 1997).
Age estimates were also obtained and we eliminated any otolith used to measure increment widths if the difference in total increment count between the two methods (counts obtained directly from the microscope versus those attained by image analysis) was greater than 7 days or 10%.
Increment counts from either the left or right sagitta, decided by coin toss, were used for age and growth rate determination.
All increment counts were made without knowledge of the size, sex, or collection date of the specimen.
This corrected increment count was subtracted from capture date to determine the fertilization date.
