Gliese 581e, the lightest exoplanet so far detected around a normal star, was spotted earlier this year.
Earlier this year astronomers announced the discovery of an exoplanet known as Gliese 581 d, which is 20 light years away and eight times the size of the Earth, and is now seen as the best contender to be habitable.
Because the planet lies so close to its parent star, a red dwarf called Gliese 581, it's hot enough to boil away any surface water and could not support life similar to that on Earth.
Intriguingly, both orbit the same star, a dwarf 20 light-years from Earth called Gliese 581, European researchers said Tuesday.
European researchers said they not only found the smallest exoplanet ever, called Gliese 581 e, but realized that a neighboring planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable zone for potential life.
Astronomers have discovered an Earth-like planet known as Gliese 581d in which European researchers believe is a habitable zone with potential to support life.
The closest astronomers have come so far is a planet called Gliese 581 c.
But it is a captivating thought that at some time in the future we will be able to board an inter galactic bus at Huddersfield Rocket Station and tell the driver: "A day rover to Gliese 581c, please.
