It was in preparation for this first major renovation that the Friends of the Observatory was organized in the late 1980s specifically to pursue private sector funds.
The Observatory has been closed since January 6, 2002, to carry out the project that has been enabled by a singularly successful public-private partnership between the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation and Parks, which owns and operates the facility, and Friends Of The Observatory (FOTO), the Observatory's non-profit support organization.
Friends of the Observatory has set a $100 million goal to pay for additional programs and exhibits.
``A lot's been done, and there's still obviously work to do,'' said Mark Pine, deputy director of Friends of the Observatory, a fund-raising group.
Anyone who has lived here any length of time has their own story to tell about Griffith Observatory,'' said Joy Picus, president of Friends of the Observatory and a former Los Angeles city councilwoman from the San Fernando Valley.
``We need an additional $4 (million) to $5 million in hand when construction starts,'' said Joy Picus, president of Friends of the Observatory and a former Los Angeles councilwoman.
The Nimoys' gift, said Joy Picus, president of the Friends of the Observatory and a former city councilwoman from Woodland Hills, truly enhances its prospects.
