Electricity generation in the UK and Ireland will be influenced by three key requirements in the period to 2020: - the closure of power stations which do not comply with the Emission Limit Value for sulphur dioxide by 31 December 2015, having opted out of the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD); - the closure of Magnox and Advanced Gas Cooled nuclear power stations, built from the 1960s, as they reach the end of their working lives; and - the need for EU Member States to comply with the legally-binding target in the Renewable Energy Directive, which specifies the proportion of all energy consumption that must be met from renewable sources by 2020.
All the measured concentrations of dioxin emission from the oil shale plant were very low, being much lower than the EU emission limit value for MSWI at 0.
Under the terms of the directive, EU countries are offered two routes to implementation: a national emissions reduction plan (NERP) or emission limit values (ELV), which adopts a more plant-by-plant approach.
