What does DRT stand for?

That battle cry renewed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the century-old group of caretakers of the historic Alamo grounds, came after two rebelling members and the Alamo's former director this month said the 18th-century mission needs a better financial plan.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library Committee is pleased to announce that the 2007 June Franklin Naylor Award for the best book for children on Texas history has been awarded to Paul Robert Walker for his book Remember the Alamo: Texians, Tejanos, and Mexicans Tell Their Stories, published in 2007 by the National Geographic Society as part of its Remember series on pivotal events in American history.

The tour was produced by Discovery Audio in cooperation with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which has maintained the Alamo since 1905.

The Ceremony is planned under the auspices of the San Jacinto Historical Advisory Board and is co-sponsored by the San Jacinto Descendants, the San Jacinto Chapters of the Sons and Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the San Jacinto Museum of History and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

And yet the Alamo legend has lost little luster with average Americans, most of whom would agree with the assertion of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (who own and operate what's left of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio) that "the death of the Alamo defenders has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of liberty.
