This Center also prepares the National Ambient Air Quality Criteria Documents that are used as the scientific basis for decisions under the Clean Air Act.
Such interest may have been heightened by the EPA's release earlier this year of finalized versions of nine nutrient water quality criteria documents and its publishing of three nutrient water quality criteria documents, all of which ate intended to help states and tribes develop their own nutrient criteria.
While EPA has developed and published criteria for a wide range of pollutants, the agency has not updated its criteria documents to include sedimentation and other key pollutants that are causing approximately 50 percent of water quality impairments nationwide.
The latter project included producing documents for upgrading and developing Criteria Documents on Cryptosporidium and newly emerging waterborne viruses.
Although EPA has provided states with useful information about nutrient overenrichment, we have not published water quality criteria documents for nutrients and most states do not have numeric water quality criteria for nutrients.
