Bishop Joe Aldred, chairman of the Council of Black Led Churches, said some people in ethnic minorities felt threatened by the BNP's presence in the region, but they would not allow a 'fringe' group to disrupt their lives.
From the first words spoken by Bishop Derek Webley, leader of the Council of Black Led Churches, the theme of the service, held at the New Testament Church of God in Lozells, was not just the callous murder of a seven-year-old girl but the searing pain left in the black community of Birmingham since her death.
