Both the Keauhou center and the Maui Bird Conservation Center were established in 1996 as part of the Hawaiian Endangered Bird Conservation Program (HEBCP), which is part of the AZA-accredited San Diego Zoo's department of Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES).
The Zoological Society manages the 100-acre San Diego Zoo, the 1,800-acre San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park (more than half of which has been set aside as protected native species habitat) and the center for Conservation and Research for Endangered Species (CRES) and receives support from the Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.
