The Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (2001) recommends that prospective teachers of secondary school mathematics (referred to below as teachers) become familiar with the ways of exploring fundamental mathematical concepts taught at this level from an advanced standpoint.
A study released by the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (Lutzer, Maxwell, & Rodi, 2002) reported that bachelor's degrees granted in mathematics fell 19 percent between 1990 and 2000, at a time when overall undergraduate enrollment rose 9 percent.
The use of technology in education, especially mathematics instruction, has been recommended on multiple occasions by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM, 1996, 2000) and the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (2001).
In a recent national report focusing on preservice teacher education, the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS, 2001) called upon teacher educators to advance both "a deep understanding of school mathematics concepts and procedures .
For example, Association Review Groups (ARGs) were formed by 14 of the member organizations of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences to serve as advisory groups through the standards development process.
Despite the surface appearance that little has changed in mathematics teacher preparation programs since the mid-1900s, the recent recommendations (Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics, NCTM, 1991, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, NCTM, 2000, and Mathematical Preparation of Teachers, Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS, 2001) have fueled discussion and subsequent research and curriculum development initiatives that have the potential to change the future practice of mathematics teacher preparation.
