The basic CMS-DRG system further reports the presence or absence of complications or comorbidities.
In 2008, that DRG became MS-DRGs 056 and 057, depending upon whether the patient exhibited major complications or comorbidities (MCC).
For instance, there are boxes for the case manager to check off if the patient meets InterQual criteria; if a surgical procedure is on Medicare's inpatient-only list; if the patient failed outpatient treatment; if the patient has complications or comorbidities that complicates his or her care; or if the patient is at increased risk for a significant clinical event.
[17] Patients classified in medical DRGs, such as DRG 14 for stroke, are categorized according to 3 severity levels: no substantial complications or comorbidities (0), moderate complications or comorbidities (1), and major complications or comorbidities (2).
The RDRG system was developed at Yale University and assigns cases in diagnosis-related groups to one of four severity levels (resource group numbers, RGNs) based on the presence of complications or comorbidities.
Look at the paired DRGs and track how many you report without complications or comorbidities.
