The 25 solar panels cost $10,700 and, in a strong show of local participation, each Community Development Council paid about 10 percent of the cost, as well as providing the bulbs, batteries and cables needed to run the panels.
The Ethiopian Community Development Council is engaged in the renovation and modernization of a 50,000 square foot, multi-purpose office building which will house their offices as well as a business incubator, classrooms for educational and vocational training programs, a computer lab, conference and meeting facilities, offices for other nonprofit agencies and retail stores.
To access the funds, villagers must stick to three rules: have a village council, known as a Community Development Council or 'CDC', have a quorum of the village to determine their projects, and put accounts of expenditure up in a public place.
