Byline: kusumv03 A proposed coal combustion waste landfill in Franklin County is raising concerns, partly because of a major coal ash spill last year in Tennessee.
Each year, more than 131 million tons of coal combustion waste (CCW) is produced as coal is burned for energy in the United States.
A spill at a coal ash pond in Tennessee late last year, which flooded hundreds of acres of land, damaged homes and killed fish in nearby rivers, helped raise awareness about the toxic contents of coal combustion waste and has put increasing pressure on the government to take action.
Nearly half of that total 50 million tons is re-used in everything from road construction to (industry claims) tooth paste, despite a growing body of scientific research indicating that these coal combustion wastes (CCW) are toxic and should not be allowed in contact with water or soils, and certainly not in direct contact with humans.
That spill, which flooded hundreds of acres of land, damaged homes and killed fish in nearby rivers, is not included in the data, although it triggered the EPA's March request of 61 power companies for information on how they manage coal combustion waste.
Meanwhile, coal combustion waste (CCW)--the noncombustible remains from coal burning--continues to pile up at the rate of about 131 million tons per year in the United States alone, and electric utilities are looking to recycle a larger proportion of this material.
There are other issues as well, he noted, including Prairie State plans to dispose of coal combustion waste at another mine site, the now-defunct Jordan Grove mine near Marissa, Ill.
The breach "is an environmental catastrophe that reveals not only the dangers of burning coal and mismanaging coal combustion waste, but also the need for federal regulation," said Steven Smith of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
