Byline: pinto03 The Australian government has announced plans to significantly expand a detention centre on Christmas Island to cope with the influx of asylum seekers.
The Christmas Island facility, where all boatpeople are taken to be assessed and detained by Australian authorities, can currently accommodate about 1,400 people but has strained to cope with recent arrivals.
In particular, I am referring to the meanminded attempt by the Ministry of Defence to claw back compensation awarded to two injured soldiers; its refusal to recognise Gulf War syndrome; the failure to provide the servicemen, many of them conscripts, with adequate protective equipment, at the Christmas Island nuclear tests; the treatment of the octogenarian veterans at the 65 year D-day commemorations who were left standing exposed to pouring rain, whilst so-called dignitaries, including Britain's PM blethered safely under a canopy.
It docked on Christmas Island on Wednesday morning, the third boat in a week carrying asylum seekers to Australia and the fifth this year.
Nearly 1,000 veterans of Christmas Island nuclear tests in the 1950s are asking Britain's High Court to hear their case for compensation.
Asylum seekers arriving by boat are still held at Christmas Island and their cases are reviewed every six months.
