Byline: ANI Washington, September 11 (ANI): Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) has announced that it has recorded the 50 millionth unique chemical substance in its registry, which is the world's most comprehensive and high-quality compendium of publicly disclosed chemical information.
Each monograph includes information on nonproprietary names, synonyms, chemical name and Chemical Abstracts Service registry number, empirical formula and molecular weight, structural formula, functional category, applications in pharmaceutical formulation or technology, description, pharmacopoeial specifications, typical properties, stability and storage conditions, incompatibilities, method of manufacture, safety, handling precautions, regulatory status, related substances, specific and general references, and date of revision.
Simplifying the sourcing process for the chemical industry, users can now search for more than 40,000 commercially available chemicals using a chemical abstracts services (CAS) number, the globally recognized number for chemical classification, on both ICIS and on Kellysearch.
However, the book does not mention several recent rulings stating that the nanosized materials are not considered different from bulk (until or unless they receive their own Chemical Abstracts Service numbers), and therefore most of the legislation does not apply to these materials.
In addition, in cooperation with the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), all CAS registry numbers were verified by matching against chemical structures, thereby eliminating many inconsistencies and leading to the addition of 35 000 registry numbers.
