What does CRS stand for?

ATM Cell Relay service is already widely available throughout much of Bell Atlantic's east coast service area.

This family includes ATM Cell Relay Services, which provide a supercharged backbone that boosts speed and consolidates capacity while integrating the networks of today, and Frame Relay Services, which are particularly well suited to handle distributed processing applications, such as client/server computing, peer-to-peer inter-LAN connections and Internet access.

On the telephone provider side, Bellcore is forging ahead with its cell relay service known as Switched Multimegabit Data Service (SMDS).

The Cellworx STN currently offers STM-1 Cell Relay Service (CRS); STM-4 Ring Interface Card (RIC); DS1 Circuit Emulation Service (CES) and CRS and DS3 Channelized CES and CRS.

The network will support voice, data, Internet protocol (IP) and multimedia service offerings, including virtual private networks (VPNs), frame relay, permanent virtual circuit (PVC) and switched virtual circuit (SVC)-based native cell relay services.

Pacific Bell has also introduced Circuit Emulation Service (CES) for ATM, which enables customers to directly connect the Pacific Bell ATM Cell Relay Service Network to their PBX trunks.

ATM Cell Relay service, based on powerful ATM and SONET (synchronous optical network) technologies, supports applications including video distribution and conferencing, distance learning, local area network interconnections, high speed data base access, digital libraries, research collaboration and Internet support for both high speed access and network backbones.

The BiLan network comprises more than 40 MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switches delivering frame relay, Internet Protocol (IP) and native cell relay services, all fully managed by the industry-leading MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager and serving more than 1,000 corporations.
