The British Association of Day Surgery (BADS) said some units had been charging patients for the drugs they need to take after surgery for some time.
David Ralphs, president of the British Association of Day Surgery, said: 'Day surgery practice varies enormously for no good reason, and many patients are being denied the opportunity to recover in their own home rather than a hospital ward.
